The men’s basketball teams of Navy, Ohio State, Marquette, and Vanderbilt will be featured at the 3rd Annual Veterans Classic on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2016 in Annapolis. This annual event will be held at the Naval Academy’s Alumni Hall on Veterans Day, opening the 2016 college basketball season. The first game will pit Vanderbilt against Marquette at 6:30 p.m. ET, and the second game will match up Ohio State and host Navy at 9:00 p.m. ET.
The 3 visiting teams will experience not only basketball, but also a rare glimpse into the lives of Midshipmen. The student athletes from Ohio State, Marquette, and Vanderbilt will be given a special tour of the Naval Academy that will include the ‘Yard,’ the noon meal formation, and a meal with the Brigade at King Hall.
Vanderbilt vs. Marquette
Led by 1st year coach Bryce Drew, the Vanderbilt Commodores were 19-14 with a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record of 11-7 last season. The Commodores have won 3 SEC titles (1965, 1974, and 1993) and 2 SEC Tournament championships (1951 and 2012). They have competed in thirteen NCAA Tournaments, making it to the Elite Eight once and the Sweet Sixteen six times. Vanderbilt has also played in 11 National Invitation Tournaments, winning it in 1990 and finishing runners-up in 1994.
Led by 3rd year coach Steve Wojciechowski, the Marquette Golden Eagles were 20-13 with a Big East conference record of 8-10 last season. Marquette has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 31 times and compiled a record of 40–33. Under coach Al McGuire, the Golden Eagles were National Champions in 1977 and runners-up in 1974. Marquette has rivalries against Louisville, Notre Dame, and DePaul.
Navy vs. Ohio State
Remarkably, Navy and Ohio State will be playing a game against each other for the first time in 85 seasons. The Midshipmen edged the Buckeyes 35-32 on February 6, 1932.
Led by 6th year coach Ed DeChellis, the Navy Midshipmen were 19-14 with a 9-9 Patriot League conference record last season. The Naval Academy began men’s basketball varsity intercollegiate competition in the 1907–08 season. Navy was retroactively recognized as the pre-NCAA Tournament national champion for the 1912–13 and 1918–19 seasons by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll and for the 1912–13 season by the Helms Athletic Foundation.
Led by 13th year coach Thad Matta, the Ohio State Buckeyes were 21-14 with a 11-7 Big Ten conference record last season. The Buckeyes won their first and only National Championship in 1960 and have 26 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Buckeyes fiercest rival is the Michigan Wolverines, and OSU has a 93–71 series lead. The Ohio State University is one of only two teams (the other being Villanova) to compete in the NCAA tournament every decade since the 1930s.
Tickets are $75 and cover both games of the doubleheader. Fans can purchase tickets at navysports.com, by calling 1-800-US4-Navy, or visiting the Ricketts Hall Ticket Office.
